Sustaina your selfa with organic, chemical-free goodness

COCONUT’S HOT SPOT — Having ridden the festive trend of eating vegetarian this past month, I have now acquired a list of places to eat yummy veggies around the downtown area (even when the festival is not happening).

One of ‘em places, aside from being a decent vegetarian restaurant, is also an organic grocery market you can shop for home cooking (and also a bakery!).

With a bunch of local goods and fresh produce on the shelf, Sustaina promises all products are completely free of chemical pesticides and fertilizers – all those things I can never be sure get washed away by my feeble scrubbing under the tap. Now that I think about this,  it scares me to think about my favorite places that can’t make the same promise.

From the outside, Sustaina doesn’t look much like a restaurant. Before this, I have many times mistaken it for a massage parlor or spa; and that’s my bad for not having paid attention because the food here really makes me feel a tad bit healthier.

The grocery is downstairs while the restaurant is just above on the second and third floors. The restaurant is a humble place with a menu of Yoshoku dishes (Western dishes with Japanese twists) that look and sound very healthy. Grilled fish steaks, tofu, brown rice, salads, herbal smoothies and all that jazz – just by looking, I already feel cleansed inside out.

What makes this place stand out?

I’d say it’s definitely their tofu! There is no doubt about it that the quality is top notch, but the variety is what got me. First and foremost, I would put a golden star on “King of Tofu” (THB220) – a combination of Yuba (tofu skin), Kinu Tofu (silken tofu cube), Goma Tofu (sesame tofu) and soymilk, served iced cold on a bowl of ice. As if that’s not already enough to excite me, the parade of tofu goes on with “Deep-Fried Smooth Sesame Tofu” (THB140), Sauteed Tofu (THB140) as mains, a gummy and chewy serving of “Sesame Tofu in Miso Soup” (THB65) as a side dish, and “Deep Fried Goma Tofu (THB40) as my appetizer. With that, your daily serving of protein should be plenty enough.

On a final note, please know this is not a tofu-only place! Sustaina’s green vegetables, mushrooms and fish dishes are plenty to be found. Things that you won’t find here, however, are red meat or chemical residues in your food.
