Apex cancels Hunger Games at Lido and Scala

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I” will not be shown by Apex Cinemas today after an anti-coup protest was planned for its premiere at the historic Scala Theater.

The movie was abruptly pulled from the theaters’ schedule last night after student group League of Liberal Thammasat for Democracy said they’d perform a protest similar to one Wednesday at Khon Kaen University in which five students were taken into military custody for flashing the three-finger salute during a speech by Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha.

“We were told to remove the film today,” Apex’s spokesperson told Khaosod English. “I can’t say why. I have no clue.”

The Hunger Games movie has been associated with the anti-coup movement since protesters adopted the three-finger salute from the film as a symbol to oppose the government.

Students yesterday announced they’d bought 160 seats at Scala to hold a “Three-finger salute, popcorn and movie” event as they watched the latest Hunger Games movie together.

The gesture has been banned by the junta.

Another anti-coup group “District Thai” was also inspired by the popular movie as they held a protest against the military government at the Hunger Games premiere last week at Leicester Square, London.

Student activist Saran Chuichai or “Aum Neko” posted this photo of herself and friends in front of a theater in France on Wednesday. The 20-year-old student fled the kingdom after being summoned by the military junta in May.
