Eating on easy street: Tamer but still tasty at 7 Sis

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — 7 Sis Kitchen is a small, unremarkable looking restaurant lined with simple wooden tables next to BTS Phra Khanong. In Bangkok, places like this are often said to hide the city’s best recipes, and 7 Sis doesn’t prove the stereotype wrong. In my nearly two years living in this city, I haven’t found a better place for Thai comfort food.

I should say at the top the flavors of 7 Sis are “farang-friendly,” which is to say the food is perfectly spicy … for me. The restaurant is tucked between a large expat condo and a hotel, so the owners have adapted to their target market. If you’re after an authentic level of spiciness, you may be disappointed.

The great spot for a casual lunch or dinner, the 7 Sis menu offers a wide array of excellent homestyle Thai dishes. Most notable is their banner dish, the aptly named Customer Favorite (THB200). A savory assortment of fried cashew-encrusted shrimp, squid and chicken in a special homemade sauce, the Customer Favorite is the healthier Thai-version of General Tso’s chicken. If there’s one thing these people know it’s the cashew nut, which they even sell at the restaurant in large packages.

The refreshing Morning Glory (THB60) and tangy Penang curry (THB120) are other stand-out dishes. These won’t blow your dopamine receptors at quite the same level as the Customer Favorite, but they’re good solid dishes always worth ordering.

For an appetizer, try the Spring Rolls (THB80). Most places in Bangkok tend to over fry their spring rolls, but 7 Sis’s rolls are light, crispy and almost taste healthy.

A meal at 7 Sis is not complete without a Mango Smoothie (THB60), which is, and I say this without an ounce of hyperbole, hands down the best mango shake in Bangkok. Let that sink in dear reader. This city is crowded with excellent shake makers, believe me I have tried most of them, but 7 SIS towers above the rest. They are thick, bursting with flavor and the PERFECT sweetness, but not too sweet.

You’re welcome.
