Australian expat accused of stabbing Patong nightclub worker

A longtime Australian expat was arrested yesterday after police said he killed the employee of a Patong nightclub. Eakkapop Thongtub writes about what happened in The Phuket News:

An Australian expat was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday after he allegedly stabbed to death a staff member outside a popular Patong beach nightclub.

Rescue workers were called to the Tai Pan nightclub at about 12:30am where they administered CPR to the victim, Sanya Khlueawaengmon, 25 of Lopburi, before rushing him to Patong hospital where he died of his injuries.

Police arrested the suspect, Mark Hamilton Pendlebury, 59 of Australia, in front of a Bangkok Bank branch about 100 meters away from the club. Police also seized a pocket knife which they said was used to stab Sanya.

Pendlebury was said to have been recording video on his mobile phone of a confrontation taking place outside the Tai Pan, at which point Sanya reportedly asked him to stop filming.

They then got into a fight which ended when Pendlebury is alleged to have stabbed Sanya in the stomach. He is currently being held at Kathu Police Station.

Pendlebury said he was acting in self-defense.

”I pulled out my camera to record what was happening and a security guard tried to stop me doing that. Before I knew it, I was being badly beaten up. I pulled out my knife and waved it back and forth to defend myself,” Pendlebury told Phuketwan from his jail cell at Kathu Police Station.

Pendlebury has lived in Phuket more than 10 years and owns a sailboat tour company with his wife Cha Cha.
