FTW! Innovative Khlong Toei Soccer Fields named to TIME’s 25 Best Inventions 2016 list

You might remember our story about the unusual non-rectangular soccer fields crafted on unused space in Khlong Toei in October.

The story about the innovative fields was picked up by media outlets around the world as an example of a newsworthy approach to solving a common inner-city problem.

Well, the idea has been tapped again as the fields have been named one of TIME magazine’s 25 Best Inventions of 2016. The fields, created by real estate developer AP Thai and digital agency CJ Worx, turned four awkwardly-shaped, unused parcels that had been filled with trash into non-rectangular soccer fields to serve the community’s underprivileged kids.

“We strongly believe that space can change one’s life and, seeing the community brought together to enjoy [the field], meant that we achieved our goal,” said a representative for AP Thai.

The soccer fields join innovations on TIME’s list that include: a levitating lightbulb, foldable bike helmet, virtual reality headset, cannabis vaping pen, sneakers that tie themselves and an artificial pancreas.

Sounds like a score to us.
