In an effort to shield young ‘uns from harassment on the Internet, social media behemoth Facebook and Singapore’s Media Literacy Council (MLC) have launched a Bullying Prevention Centre here in support of Safer Internet Day (which is today, by the way).
The site provides the essential tools and information for victims of bullying, their friends, parents, teachers and even the bullies themselves. The bullied can obtain information on what they can do should they experience something upsetting; guardians can receive advice on how to help; the bullies, well they just get a polite rebuke.
According to their press release, the online portal was produced by Facebook engineers and Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence, so you know it’s pretty legit. The Facebook Bullying Prevention Centre aims to help people have a better, more compassionate experience on Facebook, and its content will be promoted to students and teachers through a series of activities run by the MLC from Feb 10 to May.
“We live in a world where occasionally conflicts will occur, both online and off, so it’s important to give people the tools and skills to tackle this behaviour when they see it. The new Bullying Prevention Centre is part of our ongoing commitment to provide safeguards to the people who use Facebook, especially young people.” says Head of Policy for Facebook Australia and New Zealand Mia Garlick.
“We hope that by putting this kind of information at people’s fingertips when they need it we will be able to help them resolve these conflicts.”
