Customs officials turned over 375 live black ants to authorities of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) early last week, the environment bureau said.

According to DENR, the ants were shipped in two parcels that came from Wroclaw in Poland that were sent separately in December and in January.

When the parcels remained unclaimed, however, authorities began to inspect their contents — finding hundreds of live ants sealed in specimen tubes.

The DENR said that the parcels did not carry the required wildlife import permit or any supporting documents from their place of origin.

According to the environment bureau, ants and other insects have been gaining popularity among exotic pet enthusiasts.

The DENR’s Wildlife Traffic Monitoring Unit also reportedly seized smuggled tarantulas and spiderlings at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport earlier this year.

The bureau reminded the public that permits are required when importing or exporting wildlife, as the Philippines is a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

The DENR further cautioned the public against participating in illegal wildlife trade, as these exotic species can carry diseases and cause harm.
